Methodology
Last reviewed: May 7, 2026
The figure shown on the homepage is a real-time, transparent estimate of Elon Musk's net worth. Every input, formula, and assumption used to produce that number is documented below. Where assumptions differ from those used by Forbes or Bloomberg — and they sometimes do — we say so explicitly.
1. The headline formula
net_worth = tesla_direct_value
+ tesla_options_intrinsic
+ spacex_stake_value
+ other_holdings
- pledged_liabilities2. Tesla — direct shares
We use 411,000,000 shares as the baseline disclosed direct holding, consistent with the most recent SEC Form 4 filings and the 2025 proxy statement. The value contribution is 411,000,000 × TSLA_price, where TSLA_price is the most recent regular-market price polled from Yahoo Finance every 60 seconds during US market hours and every 5 minutes overnight.
3. Tesla — 2018 CEO performance options
The 2018 CEO performance award granted Musk 304,000,000 options at a weighted-average strike of $23.34 (post-splits). All twelve tranches vested by 2022. Following the November 2025 shareholder re-approval, we treat them as economically equivalent to held shares valued at intrinsic value: 304,000,000 × max(0, TSLA_price − 23.34). This matches the Forbes-and-Bloomberg approach. Litigation outcomes could change this; we will update if the package is invalidated.
4. SpaceX
We assume a 42.5% economic ownership of SpaceX (consistent with reported tender-offer disclosures) and apply a 5% liquidity discount to the most recent reported valuation. The baseline private-market valuation we use is $1.25 trillion, in line with the December 2025 secondary tender. If the SpaceX IPO prices, we will replace this with the public market cap × 0.425 and remove the discount.
5. Other holdings
- X Corp.: $25B (Musk's reported equity less reported debt-funded portion)
- Neuralink: $9B (estimated stake at last reported valuation)
- The Boring Company: $6B (estimated stake at last reported valuation)
- Cash, real estate, and other liquid assets: $3B (Bloomberg estimate, used as-is)
6. Liabilities
We deduct $3.5B for the estimated value of Tesla shares pledged as collateral against personal loans, per the most recent proxy disclosure. This is conservative — the actual outstanding loan balance is not publicly stated, but pledged shares represent the outer bound of exposure.
7. Update cadence
The TSLA price is fetched on demand and at fixed intervals (every 5 minutes by cron from a Cloudflare Worker), cached in Cloudflare KV, and served from the global edge. Between server polls, the displayed value is interpolated forward at the most recent observed rate of change so the counter animates continuously. The actual stored value is always the live price; the animation just keeps the user's display from looking frozen.

9. Limitations
This is an estimate, not a financial statement. Private-company valuations are imprecise by nature and based on the most recent reported transaction. Tax basis, blocked shares, and undisclosed positions could materially change the figure. We default to publicly sourced numbers and flag every assumption above.
